| Any thoughts on F - clearly on a downtrend | "Downtrend" -- yes in an intraday chart after topping near 26. But no from the standpoint of a weekly chart. No doubt, an expectation-breaking fall afer that nice breakout run past 16. Almost all those gains are gone. So, new base for sure, Dave. But, the advance has been very strong for this stock since the 2020 bottom. Watch for potential test of the 40-week MA. |
| whats the music playing? | A track we purchased from Pond5. Not a well-known artist! But a fun tune for sure |
| Good Morning! I'm back , was out of town working last week. | Market was boring last week anyway... ![]() |
| G'Morning….why is pattern recognition on the web version not showing patterns like cups? App version has them. | Pattern rec is working for me. Try clicking the cup-with-handle icon in the upper right (just left of the printer icon). If that doesn't work, you might try shutting down MarketSmith and restarting. |
| What was the ticker for Chris's first stock? | SBLK, GOOGL, SKY |
| Tickers please | SBLK, GOOGL, SKY, RIO |
| what is the symbol for 2 year treasury? | Unfortunately not on MarketSmith, but you can track it via Treasury Dept's data page -- https://ift.tt/8lqkjmz |
| Chris and Scott, I'm trying to re-create the Stochastics that's in MarketSmith in ThinkorSwim. I've contacted MarketSmith and I was given the metrics that MS uses but when I put into ThinkorSwim, the Stochastics look completely different. Can you help? |
The problem is that code goes back 30 years and our former parent company did not document it. We run into this problem all the time. I would you use the 5 1 3 settings on TOS. It creates a single line, which I have found to be very useful on growth stocks. |
| Good morning. What is the market pulse feature? Thanks | Hi Steven, it's embedded in every Big Picture column -- https://ift.tt/yJVBYLM |
| Good morning. What is the market pulse feature? Thanks | It's the graphic in The Big Picture on investors.com. Gives a basic snapshot of the market - is it an uptrend/correction, how many distribution days, leaders up or down on volume. |
| Ed, when I click on it, under pattern rec it shows "tight areas", "key price ranges", but no option for "bases" | Are you talking about the feature that shows cups, etc. on the MS charts, or MS lists? |
| Good Morning IBD. Ken can you address the thoughts of how the Russia invasion of Ukraine would affect the US markets? | Hi James, certain markets (oil, gas) may skyrocket for a few days, but then maybe succumb to profit takers. I think it's more important to focus on Fed, earnings and economic news. They will dictate the overall trend in 2022! Also, pls see my reply regarding past flashpoints in market history -- Korean War 1950-52, Cuban Missile Crisis of early 1960s. Cheers, HatMan Dave. |
| GM from the Carolina's. What are your thoughts on AMR - up nearly 5% in pre mkt | Looks extended now. A wild move down to the 50-day MA after it broke out at 69.39. Coal group ranked No. 2 now, strong. |
| thank you very much. welcome back. | YW, Frank! Thank you as well! |
| Cryoto stocks are running MARA RIOT GBTC | For sure, some folks are bargain hunting. They're all still trading below the 50-day MA, but will they create some nice trend-line buy points? https://ift.tt/7BwQHCe |
| Good morning: What is relationship between book value and stock price? | Hi RC, HatMan here. This may be something value investors look at as an initial screen. Traditionally, value folks got interested when a stock traded below book value of 1.0 -- that is, net assets were lower than the stock market value. IBD's CAN SLIM approach focuses on strong growth in earnings, sales, industry leading profit margins, best new product -- and institutions are willing to pay a premium for such merchandise on Wall Street. So, we've seen many great winners across many bull markets showing extraordinarily high P-B ratios at the start of their runs. https://ift.tt/Versuy8 |
| Good Morning. What is the sparkline , Col. D, Industry Group spreadsheet | It just tracks how the industry group has moved through time. |
| Good morning! Chris's reference to SBLK reminded me of a MarketSmith question I have. Under the "Industry & Sector" tab, SBLK is ranked #1 in the 9th strongest industry. Sounds strong! But when I look at other companies in the industry, I see that ZIM is also ranked #1, as is GSL and maybe others. Can you explain why this is, and perhaps more importantly how we determine the true industry leader if there are multiple number one ranked companies? |
It goes by Composite Rating and since a number have 99 ratings that's where the tie comes from. |
| SBLK has been turned back every time it hits this level. What makes it different this time? | I don't know! |
| I'm guessing that David Ryan might say now would be a time to sell SNOW | It might be! Comes down to if the market can move above last week's highs or breaks down Friday's lows. |
| Ken, DDOG? | live answered |
| TSLA seems to be now above its downtrend line | live answered |
| What is the P/E on SNOW? | N/A. We don't calculate off of earnings losses. |
| what is the term contagent? that reduce value of leveraged etf. thanks. | Contango. |
| The purple line is the 10 day MA and the Green line is the 21 day MA..is that correct? What is the orange line | That's a moving average line on the relative strength line. |
| Hi Ed, NMM is looking pretty good, a little extended at this price. | Yeah, would like to see a pause and a handle here. |
| Oops, asked the wrong question. Wanted to Know about the IBD ETF Market strategy. Welcome back David. | Thanks Steve! Ah, got it. The performance vs S&P 500 has been solid over the long term. Quickly, we suggest 100% cash when the IBD outlook is in "market in correction," then go 100% invested in SPY, QQQ, DIA or something similar when we note a follow-through day and an outlook upgrade. Go to 50% invested when the outlook downgrades to "Uptrend under pressure." And here's an Investor's Corner on the topic https://ift.tt/e3GBdYI |
| What does history tell us will happen to markets when Russia invades? Markets hate uncertainty and conflict. Would anticipate big drop when/if happens. | The Cuban missile crisis and the Korean war breakout created fast corrections in the 5% to 19% range, but US stocks rallied back sharply afterward. |
| Great insight there scott thanks | live answered |
| well said Scott | live answered |
| please discuss SBLK! | live answered |
| Do you typically swing trade TQQQ or is it a viable long-term hold? | I always go in with a swing trade mentality. But I've often held for much longer if it just keeps trending higher and doesn't do anything wrong. I'll wait for QQQ to either get extended above its moving average lines or start dropping below moving average lines. |
| can you talk about why you changed to market in confirmed uptrend on market smith | It was purely on the follow-through day, Jan. 31, in which S&P 500 rose 1.9% in higher NYSE volume vs. prior day in Day 6 of a new rally attempt. The Nasdaq gained 3.4% the same day, and in higher volume. So its FTD was even stronger. We don't want to miss any new potential tradeable rally. For sure, Robert, not all follow-through days work, but we want to commit the "error of commission" rather than the "error of omission." Cheers, HatMan Dave https://ift.tt/9XQi16j |
| DAC is at it's all time high and reports tonight | It, ZIM, SBLK, GSL are all acting well. |
| DAC: look at the monsterous move in the weekly chart. | Hi Prabhu, it's certainly been "monster" like in this challenging market. Really strong, impressive breakout. Let's be cautious not to chase it on the way up. We might have a little "buy the rumor, sell the news" action ahead of its Q4 results after the close. |
| DAC & ZIM = Containers.. Still rates are holding strongly.. As we discussed very different segment compared to Dry (or tankers)… | Definitely. |
| The Leisure-Lodging segment (G7011) weekly chart is sitting on its 10-wk. Its 0.3% above its 50-day, but, trying to tighten up. HLT (EPS 2/16), WH (EPS 2/15), H (EPS 2/16), MAR (EPS 2/15). The group lacks volume, but, certainly setting up. | As I was putting my industry group spreadsheet, I noticed it was one of the spaces with the most additions on the Growth 250. |
| Ali , still can't find your youtube channel, can you oost the link on IBD homepage? | https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCacO3Lz713mffQir2ginPyw |
| DWAC is at the piviot now, crazy!!!! | This is a "divert all meme power to..." moment. |
| SBLK- Is there much risk in DAC earnings? | Well, DAC is in containers while SBLK is in dry bulk. So not a direct comparison. |
| I'm not going to be able to watch Charles live on Friday. Will recording be available Friday afternoon? | Yes. The video should be up within 30 minutes of the show ending. |
| Whats your opinions on Hotel stocks at the moment such as HLT or MAR? | live answered |
| Is the 10 day purple and the 21 day green? Thanks | Yes, for more details go to investors.com/LiveFAQ |
| Ali, got it!!! Thanks! | Thank YOU! ![]() |
| when you say 5% position do you mean of your portfolio? | Yes! ![]() |
| Ed , I spent 1% on it , sols 1/3 for big gain, having fun watching now. | Nice! |
| Thoughts on NFLX | Damaged goods. It will probably take months for it to repair itself. |
| What does Scott mean "indicated at 76?" | I assume he means CF was trading before the open around 76 (or bid/ask suggested that). |
| Any thoughts on GOOGL's last weekly bar? Finished in upper half but biggest range… | Closed in the upper half, which is positive. The size of the bar doesn't bother me. |
| can we checkout CPE potential pullback buy 99rs | CPE is volatile and has been lagging other energy stocks. I don't know why. |
| LNG… = US Export…. Different "dynamics" compared to many of the E&P / Intergrated oil cvo's etc… | live answered |
| HUT 8 (HUT) to early to buy? | It's really a bet on Bitcoin. You might want to check out Bitcoin charts for technical action there. |
| Hi! Any thoughts on Alcoa ? | Leader in 2022 so far for sure. Just hit the 20% profit zone from a recent buy point out of a double bottom-like base at 52.96. More on this rule here -- https://ift.tt/rAQnjMK |
| LNG is gas not oil. Look at the EPS for 2022 vs. 2021. LNG should rocket after the its earnings in 17 days. Gas Prices in Northeast have had huge increases | I don't know if LNG stock moves on U.S. nat gas prices, given that it's all about exporting. I think LNG stock *might* reflect Europe/Asia nat gas prices or the spread between overseas prices vs. U.S. prices. But I don't really know. |
| Scott- I own part of a Houston oil company. Oil will hover around $100/bbl and stay "disjointed" for next 14-18 months. Majors are struggling to deliver finished lubes, due to additives contraints. Do not think will go much above $100./bbl. | Good color. History has shown the market sneezes when we get to triple-digit oil prices, right? |
| ET...only position I still own from precovid! Dividend | Thanks for sharing Tim; nice dividend yield even after the rebound off the lows. Did Energy Transfer sustain or even raise its payout in 2020, 2021? |
| Scott , can you share your top 3 fav books in your collection? | Hi Darren, send email to reachus@marketmsith.com, I'll send you a list |
| Scott - you're probably better than average on macro calls. Old quip: Economists have predicted 9 of the last 4 recessions... | Even worse, you can have the right macro call and be wrong on the market. If I had the "macro" right for Q2/Q3 2020 GDP, that would have scared me off stocks during that huge rally. |
| US have BIG benefit of excess gas reserves.. / gas production… The gas.. can then be consumed domestically (if pipe line infra structure in place).. or exported… to export… need (VERY expensive) LNG train to chill the gas to -177 deg F…. and then you need LNG vessels to move the LNG (in it's chilled state)… |
100%. |
| David Ryan said he uses the Daily Graphs Company Index stock list in MS and sorts them by Industry Group, then Comp Rating then RS. Can you tell me what is the criteria for a stock to make this list and the benefits of how David uses this list? |
He goes into each industry group from 1 to 50 usually and then sorts by Comp, then RS. |
| Hello everyone, are MS Sectors GIC or SIC? | Neither. We've had our own 33 sectors in place for decades and mapped to 197 industry groups. |
| Please explain ex-div date. Must one already own before ex-div date or including the ex-div date? | I think you have own before the ex-dividend date - which is why stocks with big dividends will fall on the ex-div date (and not the day after). |
| Perhaps next week, while looking at the spreadsheet, you could look at the stocks in one or two of the groups that had made large moves over the past few weeks. That would help us understand why a particular group is moving. Is it truly a group move, or is it influenced by one or two stocks? |
Great idea, Larry. I'll put it on my to do list. |
| anyone nibbling at tqqq? | There were some nibbles around the market bottom or FTD - expectations of some sort of bounce. Market seems to be in a mini-range now. Will it break up or down? |
| Is this spreadsheet avail on investors.com? | investors.com/ibdliveFAQ |
| are the industry groups weighted on price or market cap? | Price weighted. |
| Is AA doing well? | Pls see my reply to a Q on AA, thx |
| Ed, Elon offers you his protection. | LOL. |
| TSLA - Gov attack on non-union shop! | Ah ha! Possibly, Scott! |
| BROS: I call that a "Bottom Base Double Bottom" | Frank, I like that! |
| BROS double bottom? | Certainly in the past three months. But one flaw, if you will: The midpoint of 55.48 is in the lower half of this base; the midpoint of the pattern is 59.75. You'd generally want to see the middle peak in the upper half at least. https://ift.tt/nVbcwTl and https://ift.tt/4aMVCNU |
| BROS earnings on Wednesday | Key report Tom! |
| Bros, Earnings 2/9 | Yup |
| BROS earnings out soon | Yes, on Wednesday! |
| Chris is smiling. You can't trade Bitcoin via Grayscale. But if you had bought Bitcoin on Coinbase at the low you would probably make more than you are going to make in the stock market for the entire year. | Just make sure you buy at the low. |
| This is a test. I asked earlier about BROS and I've asked one ? each of the past 3 weeks. Can someone just respond with a check that you are seeing my comment? And here's a follow up ? if you can see this. Can you tell me how to find/revise my name, as I just see my first name? |
Hi! Changing your name should be in Zoom settings. We have over 200 unanswered questions in our queue. The audience only sees the answered ones. Thank you so much for your patience! |
| Early entry on ABNB ? breaking a downtrend | I'd rather buy EXPE/BKNG/MAT/HLT than ABNB, which still is well off highs. |
| Chris, Thanks for bringing SKY to our attention; it's moving upward. | live answered |
| great blue dot analysis Chris G, agree 100% | live answered |
| nice point chris, thanks to all. | live answered |
| Why does Swingtrader have Market in a Downtrend? | The team for ST has a more short-term view of the index action and makes that outlook based on set-ups that fit the swingtrading strategy. |
| canadian banks are very strong | live answered |
| Really like EWBC | live answered |
