IBD Live FAQ: Helpful Links & Answers To Questions About Zoom, Charts, IBD's Methodology & More

X

The goal of IBD Live is to help you become a better investor by providing in-depth market insights and analyzing top stocks in real time each trading day. Please utilize this IBD Live FAQ page as your go-to resource for answers to the frequently asked questions we receive in the Q&A during our daily show, plus helpful links to more information across our site.

Launching The Show

I'm having trouble accessing the IBD Live landing page and/or launching the show. What should I do?

Clear your cache, close out all browser windows and relaunch your browser. Make sure you don't have any pop-up blockers on.

Subscribers only are able to access the show from one device at a time. If you want to switch from viewing on a laptop to your mobile device, you must close out all open browser windows – not just the Zoom application.

Please reach out to our customer service team if you have taken these steps and you're still experiencing problems. Thanks for your patience.

Zoom Issues

I'm having video and/or audio issues with Zoom. What should I do?

Here are a few things you can try:

  • Make sure to close all other open windows/applications and disconnect other devices from your network.
  • If you are still experiencing issues, you may need to restart the Zoom application – and/or your computer.

Can I watch the show on my phone?

Yes, you can – just download the Zoom app. Log in on the IBD Live landing page from your phone, then click on the show link and the Zoom app will automatically launch.

For additional questions related to Zoom, here's a link to IBD's Zoom FAQ document.

Regression Channel Anchor Points

The team uses regression channel lines to gauge where the market may find support or hit resistance. For those who would like to set up their own regression channel, below are the current anchor points to use for the regression line. We use standard deviations of +/- 0.5 and 1 to create the regression channel.

IBD Live Beginner's Guide

An annotated chart from IBD founder Bill O'Neil as seen in one of our old workshop books.

What charts are you using?

We primarily use MarketSmith charts. We also utilize Thinkorswim from TD Ameritrade at times for candlestick analysis.

What moving averages do you use?

  • MarketSmith daily charts: 10-day SMA = light pink, 21-day EMA = green, 50-day SMA = red, 200-day SMA = black. All are simple moving averages (SMAs) other than the 21-day, which is an exponential moving average (EMA). EMAs give greater weight to recent trading days.
  • MarketSmith weekly charts: 10-week SMA= red, 40-week SMA = black.
  • MarketSmith monthly charts: 10-month SMA = green, 24 month SMA = light pink.
  • Thinkorswim daily charts: 21-day EMA = green, 50-day SMA = red, 200-day SMA = tan.

Why do you focus on certain stocks during the show and not others?

IBD primarily focuses on top growth stocks with strong fundamentals that are forming chart patterns and outperforming the overall market. We don't focus on beaten-down stocks, illiquid stocks (typically less than $20 million in dollar volume), stocks under $10 or stocks with poor fundamentals. When market rotation slams growth stocks, however, we focus more on technical strength and forward-looking estimates vs. current fundamentals.

We try to analyze as many stocks as we can during the show, between answering your questions live or via the Q&A. But due to the volume of questions, we're unfortunately not able to get to every ticker. The audience only sees the questions that are answered, not the hundreds that are unanswered. However, we hope the education and analysis we provide can help you learn how to grade stocks beyond the daily livestream.

Where can I learn more about IBD's methodology?

See the "IBD Methodology" section below for helpful links.

How do I ask the team a question?

We encourage participants to ask any and all questions they may have during the live show — please submit your question in the Zoom Q&A. We will get to as many questions as we can during the broadcast!

Please note: The audience only sees the questions that have been answered. We typically have hundreds of unanswered questions in the queue at the end of each session, so please do not be discouraged if we aren't able to answer your query!

I wish IBD Live had an end-of-day broadcast. Is that something you're considering?

IBD Live panelists Ken Shreve, Ed Carson and Justin Nielsen switch off as Alissa Coram's co-hosts throughout the week for our "Stock Market Today" show, an end-of-day market wrap that airs live on IBD's Twitter, Facebook and YouTube pages at 1:00 p.m. PT.

The show discusses the day's market action and a few key stocks on our radar in 8-10 minutes. We post this video on Investors.com within an hour of the market's close.

Ready List & Watch List

Where can I find the Ready List and Watch List?

The link to the IBD Live Ready List and Watch List can be found on the IBD Live landing page alongside that day's archived episode. Click on the linked text at the top of the description that says "Check out an edited version of today's IBD Live Q&A and two key stock lists."

Then, once you're on that day's Q&A page, scroll down below the Q&A to find the lists.

What's the difference between the Ready List and Watch List?

The Ready List contains top stocks that meet our fundamental and technical screening criteria that are in or near actionable buy areas. However, the charts of these stocks still need to be analyzed to determine the exact proper entries.

The Watch List is our universe list, or as the team likes to say: "the pond we're fishing in." This is a list of stocks that meet our fundamental and technical screening criteria, but are not yet in or near actionable buy areas. This means that the Ready List is a subset of the Watch List.

Is the Ready List the same as the Leaders List on Leaderboard?

While there may be some overlap of the IBD Live Ready List and the Leaders List on Leaderboard, they are different. Leaderboard focuses on traditional IBD buy points, while the IBD Live Ready List can also contain stocks that have aggressive or early entries. Leaderboard also will hold winning stocks for extended periods. The IBD Live Ready List removes stocks that are no longer actionable.

How often are the Ready List and Watch List updated?

Our team maintains and updates these lists on a daily basis.

How do I import the Ready List and Watch List into MarketSmith?

Watch this video for details.

What is a full position? What is a half position?

For active CAN SLIM investors, we typically recommend 8-10 stocks in a portfolio. In a portfolio of 10 stocks, a full position would be equal to 10% of your portfolio. A half position would be 5%, while a quarter position would be 2.5%.

See the "Portfolio Management" section below for further guidelines on how many stocks to own, how to size your positions and how to pyramid into trades.

I want access to all your products, tools and educational resources. Is there a bundle for everything?

Yes, there is – and it's called Founder's Club.

How Do I…

How do I set up regression channel lines in Thinkorswim?

Our current anchor points are 4/6/20 and 11/4/20 on the Nasdaq. We use standard deviations of 0.5 and 1 above and below the regression line. To learn more, check out this article from TDAmeritrade on regression channel lines.

How do I flag mutual funds in MarketSmith?

Type 0MUTI in the chart's ticker box.  Note this starts with a zero and not the letter O. Open up the "Related Information" panel on the right-hand side and go to "Funds In Index." Click on the "Show All Component Data" button.

Flag all of the funds in the list below the chart area by clicking on the flag icon to the left of each of the funds in the bottom panel.

How do I customize moving averages in MarketSmith?

Click on the wrench in the upper right corner of the chart. Click on "Moving Averages" under the "Custom Chart Elements" heading.

How do I import stock lists into MarketSmith?

To Copy: Select symbols from the appropriate spreadsheet column and hit CTRL+C (Command+C on a Mac) on your keyboard.

To Paste: In the List Manager, highlight the list you would like to copy the symbols into and hit CTRL+V (Command+V on a Mac) to paste. The copied symbols will now appear in List Contents along with the existing ones for that list.

Pasting Into Sorted Lists: If new items are pasted into a list that is already sorted, then those items will be integrated into the list according to the existing sort. To see all newly pasted symbols together, re-sort on the # column. New symbols will appear at the bottom of the list, highlighted and grouped.

How do I draw channel lines in MarketSmith?

Click on the "Screens, Alerts & Notes" panel on the left-hand side of the chart. Then, click on the "Alerts" button and select the "Parallel Line" tool within the line box.

How do I set Price Scale to Standard in MarketSmith?

On a weekly chart, click the wrench in the upper right corner of the chart. Under "Custom Chart Elements" you'll see "Price Scale: Best Fit" or "Price Scale: Standard" – if you see the latter, click on it.

That will enable the standard price scale, our preferred setting, which gives the appearance of less-volatile price action on the weekly chart. This feature is not available on daily charts.

What if I have other MarketSmith-related questions?

For further questions related to MarketSmith, please schedule an appointment with one of our coaches by clicking the "Talk To A Coach" button at the top of the MarketSmith home page.

Q&A

Why aren't my questions in the Q&A getting answered?

Due to the volume of questions, we're unfortunately not able to get to every submission during the show. We are doing our best and appreciate your patience!

Can you answer all outstanding questions after the show ends?

We'd love nothing more than to be able to answer every question every day. But after the show concludes, we have other responsibilities related to creating and updating the content and tools provided on Investors.com, Leaderboard, SwingTrader, MarketSmith and more.

However, feel free to reach out to us on Twitter and we might be able to answer your question on that platform.
