Q&A Summary

Question Answer
Morning! Can you PLEASE address this morning's jobs numbers that came in at 8:30 AM ET? How does it match up to Jed Graham's article from last night? Does this week's data that came in historically match up to the Jobs data? Do we see direct
correlation? What is the current % on if we will see positive data or soft data? Here is Jed's article: https://ift.tt/DsjEaeU
This is just one week of jobless claims. Trend has been down. One might suspect that firms would look to slow hiring before cutting staff.
Does the breakdowns in supposed true market leaders Enphase and Celsius provide you with skepticism about this rally attempt or is it a case that they may not be true market leaders? Just tells me that the market is still vulnerable, trying to climb a wall of worry. Q3 earnings season is the next wild card. Can't believe guidance is going to be all that great.
Can you do a poll: are you buying today with a FTD? Early in the morning, after amateur hour is over, by the last trading hour… Good suggestion. We'll do it.
Morning. What were todays symbols.thanks Rachel is SWAV, Justin had WING, KNSL. Missed Harold's somehow.
ENPH - Tues took a pilot pos w/ tight stop. Stopped out yesterday (thankfully no serious gap down). Was I the only one surprised? Some news discussed something about short sales impacts which I didn't understand. Was it this or solar industry
bad news?
The only thing I saw was a report on Benzinga that there was a big put trade.
QUestion on DUOL. I use the product every day as I am learning a few foreign languages. Have done well in the past on buying positions in companies in which I use the product. Thoughts?thanks. Classic bottoming base. Acting well. Impressive fund sponsorship as well. Still losing money but company also spends a lot on R&D.
did i miss news on PCTY? Don't see any news.
When will the first MarketDiem letter be posted/sent? The first one dropped on Tuesday. We are targeting midmorning Pacific time.
CELH is a complete mess on the daily but the weekly chart still looks constructive. Completing a nice cup and handle on a low volume pullback from recent highs. Yesterdays move lower found support exactly at the 20 week EMA. One to watch if
the daily chart setups up again.
generally agree but two latest weekly declines came in higher volume than prior week, hurting A/D Rating of D. Seeing some signs of distribution but not much in the way of accumulation (for now).
Harold, did you hold your TQQQ position that you mentinoed on Tue? Yes, I'm holding TQQQ
Harold, why not SQQQ today? There was a bullish close yesterday, the Stochastics are bullish also, not taking a position in SQQQ
Wish I had kept TQQQ - I got nervous and took an almost 10% profit Now it looks like you nailed it. That's why I'm very nervous about holding a big position even intraday.
why did solar stocks get hit yesterday. ? thanks When the market's in a correction, it usually goes after everything. Solar stocks were among the last left standing, and sellers hit them hard yesterday.
Ed - just got to alerts on LNTH crossing 10 day and 50 days - Actionable??? Thanks Looks like it's wedging to me (rising in light volume) Would rather wait for a new base.
Does IBD Live have a watchlist?
Rachel mentioned a "ready list?" I believe she was mentioning the IBD Live Ready List and Watch List.
ED -- SRPT is moving on significant volume. +5.68% Vol +464% Thanks. I was going there soon, but didn't realize it was moving.
Would IBD call today a follow through day if volume just breaks the average of what index? and does it have to sustain it for the day or does it meet the qualifictions? It's the fourth day of a rally attempt, so yes, it's time to start looking for a follow-through day. Would be suprised to see one today ahead of Friday's key jobs report. Maybe tomorrow, we'll see.
Does contrafund have to be 100% invested? No fund will be 100% invested in a stock. A 2% position is typical for a mutli-billion dollar fund
RPM gap up on earnings, a buy if FTD? After four huge gains, looks very extended to me.
Hi guys do you all prefer EMA or SMA when it comes to 50 day MA For the 50dma, we use SMA. The 21 is the only EMA we use
In the energy sector, any opinion on Devon Energy (DVN)? Well above 50 day, volume decent, good dividend. Time for a swing trade or initial position? After seven gains in eight sessions, not going to chase it here. Needs to consolidate, take a breather. If it does, then maybe it makes a run at 73-75.
Any news on WCN. Gapping down Don't see anything. WM also down.
Ken Shreve - Justin chose KNSL, AZO and BAH. I did not hear him mention WING I did in the preshow.
The indexes are right near their 21 day moving averages and have started to back off. live answered
As we are going to approach earnings season again. Can you go over an example how exactly you look at the options? Doesn't have to be today. Here's a video from me and Justin on this topic: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sm22npXCSO0
Harold mentioned GTLS live answered
My question about contrafund is does there mandate allow them to hold large positons of cash? Most funds can't hold more than 5% or 10% cash.
Will relief of sanctions on Venesuala boost CVX since they have access to oil fields there? Up sharply past 4 sessions. Although White House official on CNBC earlier that discussion of removing sanctions still in very early stages. Nothing set in stone.
LNTH??? Pass for me. Looks like it's wedging, especially past 3 sessions. I'd rather wait for a new base.
I am holding a small pilot position in BJ that I am holding at a 4% loss. It is in MarketSmith buy range, but fell below the 50 average yesterday. Is this stock worth giving more time, or is it time to cut and run. Any thoughts? Thank you! I don't like how volume picked on the downside the past two days. I would start reducing.
CROCS thoughts Good to see it retaking the 200-day. Now wowed by next year's estimates.
Is LLY actionable? Tough market but it doesn't look too extended to me.
Good morning IBD. I logged in late today. Have you talked about CYBR yet? One of the better looking stocks in the security software group for sure. Classic example of a bottoming base. A/D Rating of B+ is solid.
what do you make of the declining volume on VRTX in the last 3 days as it's rising, concern or not really? I do not like that action. Looks like it may pull back again.
CPNG poised to hit pivot on first stg 1 cup base post IPO, noted earlier this week at first cross of 200D. Lots of blue bars, some on high vol, RS improving. OK, admittedly I'm stalking this one. A strong week for sure. Extended from its MAs now. Would be great to see it go tight from here.
Is a Swing Trade the same as a day-trading, just a slightly longer period of time? Days vs day? Timeframe is several days to several weeks. We may take profits/cut losses the same day as the initial buy depending on how the stock is trading.
Is BTU actionable or extended? About 12-13% above the 10 and 21 day MAs. Best time to get in was the heavy volume move back above the 50-day
LLY retaking traditional pivot live answered
the whole market has turned - any news? Looks like it may be Treasury yields.
What would be the top 5 leaders today for a FTD candidate buy? Doesn't look like FTD now.
Shorts going after RUN May have spilled over into ENPH live answered
If I'm subscribed to IBD Live why would I want MarketDiem? What are the benefits in comparison? MarketDiem is targeting beginning investors. You won't see anything in it that you haven't already got from IBD Live.
I'm not in ENPH this time around, but it should give everybody serious pause, as it's the flagship of our number one Industry Group, Energy-Solar. ENPH's consolidation breakdown yesterday morning failed to become a shakeout, now it has a long
way to go filling the gap below and then some, reversing that former (7/27) one-day-wonder, great-green bar, when it launched out of its former consolidation down at $220. Let's put this in context. We're six weeks out from elections.
Solar is heavily dependent upon government stimulus. If the Democrats lose their majority, fiscal support would probably dry up incredibly. This here is the market getting cold feet due to ELECTION UNPREDICTABILITY. Expect more of same
to rattle and raise volatility in other, similarly vulnerable sectors to boot.
Excellent point. Never a good sign when the leader breaks down, especially on an up day.
HLIT please Super strong breakout but can't chase it up here. Watch for some tight weekly closes near highs. That could presage higher prices.
LLY is moving Exceptional strength lately
Should be demand for WSC in Florida Very good point, Robert!
VRTX have you discussed it yet? I increased my position yesterday now its down 1.2% from it. Looks like it could form a handle here
Harold, are you switching to SQQQ now? Not yet, I used a 78 min chart (TOS) for my entry and there's no sell signal yet
ED Many of the Pollution Control Companies are going to have Revenue shortages with their 3rd quarter earnings. Hurricane IAN will help with 4th and 1st quarter numbers. They are silenting (cutting headcount via terminations and retirement)
but still concerned with their 4th quarter and 2023 forecasts. It's much more difficult to acquire large and mid size competitors due to the stringent M & A attitude of the FTC. It has and always will be a growth by acquisition industry.
Clean Harbors is in the Hazardous Waste Business (which is down). They recently made a serious of smaller acquisitions, which from my point of view allows for Smoke and Mirrors with Revenue/Earnings.
Great insights, Peter!
Have you seen the insanity of HKD? From 2,555 to 40? That's really something.
Ali-CPNG-been in for a while, happy to be up 87.15% as of today. Great job!
Is Nasdaq flashing FOLLOW THRU DAY We need a strong gain in volume heavier than the previous session… with the downside reversal for the major indexes, we're not there yet.
Harold - I guess the longer you look for a reason to get in, the smaller the position size… 🙂 Yes, good point!
How about PYPL? Well, it is a legitimate bottoming base. The 40-week line could still be a significant resistance level, though. Seems like a lot of bad news priced in already. Not my cup of tea, but it's making a good case for a bottom.
Great insight, Harold. Just as David Ryan has pointed out that if he's in a stock, and it takes too long for it to gain any traction, that itself can be a sell signal, preempting weakness that may suddenly go against you… your point is a similar
one: If it takes you too long to see a reason to buy, that also in itself is a reason to step away. Like Minervini said, a good stock should jump out at you and tell you to get in. Thank you, Harold!
Good points indeed!
CF appears to be holding up amidst the volatility I agree. Trying to form a new base. Watching how it plays out.
XLU is down again, nearing a 52W low. Shouldn't defensive sectors be holding up? Rising rates are tought for dividend stocks.
You can get some cheap used cars in Florida Many are underwater I imagine.
Answered live - thank you Great
what does BAH actually do? What is "Civil Management" in the context of "Intelligence" Booz Allen is well known for management consulting too, but it seems a lot of their biz comes from the federal government. Jim, many years ago I was once contracted by BAH to do research on the Japanese media for a US government agency.
ORLY has organized clean stores and helpful employees Agree
RYAN Insurers acting well. They tend to do well in a higher interest rate environment. RYAN still in the early stages of forming a new base. Not ready yet.
Harold, I dont have TOS. Does Marketsmith have the same tool? Unfortunately, the MarketSmith charts cannot be customized like TOS charts
Can you remind us of what the tan line is near the RS line and how you apply it? Couldn't find it in the FAQ (doesn't mean it's not there, lol.) it's a 24-month MA and we use a cross below that on a monthly as a long-term leader sell signal
where can you see the up down volume at 1.6 for KNSL Weekly MS chart (below annual earnings box) shows up/down of 1.4
Peter, Phil, Ira- love the story behind the news and timely stock action information you add to the show. '+1
Hey David, Thanks for the insight. Missed you at Founder's Club! We could have had a Scotch together! Thank you Jim! I would have definitely enjoyed that. Maybe next time!
KNSL Monthly chart is awesome Agree! And the weekly chart is not too bad either.
Can you check out AJG? AJG taking back the 50-day line would be bullish, and raises possibility of clearing a narrow trendline as the new base forms. Interesting, Andrew, how many insurance firms have been strengthening... amid higher interest rates, Hurricane Ian...
wondering what other bullish factors may be helping.
What happened to the closing range indicator in MS? I noticed yesterday that it had disappeared. I'm still seeing it — have you tried clearing your cache and relaunching charts? If you need more help troubleshooting, please email marketsmith@investors.com
Harold, hypothetically, at what point would you switch from TQQQ to SQQQ? It would to take out today's lows. So far it has found support at today's low
Really liked last night's ( Hat-Man's) Big Picture . . . "Rolling Recession." Must read for all! most definitely.
could someone please tell the people not on the show to be quiet when the show is on? it is very distracting. It's been happening often. Thanks Whoops, I might've taken myself off mute accidentally. Apologies.
TSLA is down because of comments from Chinese govt I think it was deliveries/TWTR.
Harold: Are you selling your TSLA holding? No, holding my small position
AZPN has not stopped climbing regardless of the market Incredible move, I agree.
Harold, Chris: SPY - there is a problem with the 10/4 daily bar (show low of 366.57). Can we get this corrected? send a screenshot to marketsmith@investors.com
And of course, bad news is good news on the job front. good news would be bad news Exactamundo.
Your Gessel rally is as good as mine. Ha ha!
Pollution Control companies -- It may be interesting to see if Bill Gates and other prominate individual investors are selling some of their shares . . . . They invest in pollution control as a hedge. Interesting!
Why a 37 day MA? He's saying you can make it anything you want.
Toe test Yes
when will the swing trader replay be ready? today? We have the scorecard webinar at 4:30 ET today. The recording will be available in the evening/tomorrow.
This constant reminder of patience for a true market rally is so helpful, thank you live answered
